With Marvel Studios set to take the Hall H stage later tonight, fans are eagerly awaiting big surprises from the studio. We already know the Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2 cast will be on hand with the first footage for fans, and that Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson will be on hand to promote the upcoming film. (Although Doctor Strange star Benedict Cumberbatch hasn’t officially been confirmed to appear, he was seen greeting fans in the Hall H line in the early morning hours.) However, that’s about all we know. With both Thor: Ragnarok and Spider-Man: Homecoming filming, it’s unlikely we’ll get too much from those films, but then again, Marvel could always surprise us. Especially considering Loki himself, Tom Hiddleston, is already on hand at the convention to promote Legendary’s Kong: Skull Island.
Taking a few moments out of his busy schedule, the actor briefly talked with the folks over at Deadline about the third Thor installment, teasing some character changes in Thor: Ragnarok, while also promising more dramatic and comedic elements this go round.
Fans of Loki will note that we haven’t seen Hiddleston on screen as the character since 2013’s Thor: The Dark World, so going into Thor: Ragnarok, it’s safe to say we’ll see some changes with his character. However, as Hiddleston notes, his character isn’t the only one we’ll see changes with. After the events of The Avengers: Age of Ultron, we’ll see a few character shifts in both Thor and the Hulk as well.
DEADLINE: You’ve been filming the Taika Waititi-directed third Thor movie in Australia the past few weeks with Chris Hemsworth back as the God of Thunder and Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk in the mix. How does Ragnarok differ from past Marvel movies?
HIDDLESTON: I think the experience being in The Avengers has changed Thor as a character. He’s picked-up a few Earthly ways and certainly a few Earthly companions. And also, the experience of being on Earth, I think, has changed Loki. I don’t want to reveal too much, but when you see the three characters who haven’t shared the same space since the end of Avengers there’s a lot that happens to great dramatic and comedic effects.
The actor also commented at his last appearance in Hall H for Marvel, back in 2013, where he took the stage in costume as Loki. Fans that were lucky enough to be in attendance went absolutely nuts for Hiddleston’s surprise appearance. For the actor, it was a truly fun experience.
DEADLINE: There was a lot of enthusiasm when you showed up as Loki back in 2013 – a flag-planter with the fans…
HIDDLESTON: Turning up as Loki three years ago was an unprecedented moment for me in my short career and it was just so much fun. It was more fun than should be allowed. Partly because it’s so rare that you get to play a character from film in a live context and there’s this theatrical cosmic fascist standing onstage being cheered by seven thousand people and we all loved it. I think we all had a good time anyway.
With Marvel’s big panel only hours away now, and Hiddleston on hand at SDCC, hopefully we’ll see him take the stage again this year – even if it isn’t in costume – to tease the film. Thor: Ragnarok will hit movie theaters on November 4th, 2017.
