Everyone is waiting to finally get some footage of Thor: Ragnarok. The roll out of still images on EW a few weeks back raised the interest level in the film significantly. It is obvious from the visuals and from the reputation of director Taika Waititi that this is going to be a unique Marvel film in many ways. The hunger for a trailer has been great, and now there’s a rumor going around social media about a possible trailer reveal.
Now the question is if this is legitimate or not. Personally, I’m guessing no, it’s not. Recently Disney/ABC has been using their trailers as a way to increase interest in properties they really care about. So the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 trailer came out during a hyped college football game and several other trailers have been part of a push for Jimmy Kimmel Live. At this point, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is so low in the ratings that doubling the audience wouldn’t mean much. Also, notice there is the mention of Chloe Bennet, but no video or sourcing for the quote.
The most glaring problem is that it makes little sense to use the trailer as a ratings-boost and not reveal it ahead of time. If Marvel Studios does give a trailer to Coulson and Crew they will announce it from the tallest mountaintop they can find and try to drum up ratings on the show. Bennett slipping it to a random Instagram user is not good publicity. Also, note how trailers have been hyped recently. Now studios release a five-second trailer to build excitement. Remember that tiny Ant-Man trailer?
The only part of the rumor that makes sense is timing. Now is a perfect season to drop the first trailer for a November release dated movie. Doctor Strange got its first trailer on Kimmel on April 12th. Thor: The Dark World‘s teaser released a little later on April 24th of 2013. So one way or another, fans should get a view of the Hulk and Thor and Strange soon. We’ll see if it happens anytime soon on an Agents of S.H.I.E.LD. episode or not.
