Like the first Thor director Kenneth Branagh, Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi has a knack for working in front of the camera. Having appeared in several films – most of which his own – Waititi is one of those fantastic character actors who brings levity and silliness to whatever film he’s in. And while he’s been busy directing and overseeing post-production for his Asgardian epic, he has also been able to slip in a role for himself in the film. Speaking to the AVClub during a gala in New York, Taika elaborated on his appearance in the cosmic saga.
It’s not like a thing that I’ve ever planned, but now I’m in all of my movies in a small role or a larger role. I’ll probably just keep doing that. It’s like a dumb thing I do now.
Waititi isn’t the only director to have a part in his own MCU film. Iron Man visionary Jon Favreau has played a pretty significant role in the past 8 years as Happy Hogan; Captain America director Joe Russo has appeared in both The Winter Soldier and Civil War in differing roles; and James Gunn kind of cameoed in the first Guardians of the Galaxy as the dancing baby Groot.
Knowing Waititi’s penchant for onscreen silliness and spindly demeanor, we can probably bet that he’s playing some sort of comedic relief in the planet Hulk’s in. Maybe a minion to Jeff Goldblum‘s Grandmaster? Or perhaps he’s playing Miek, the scrawny alien bug from the Planet Hulk comic?
