Ever since it’s inception, the geniuses behind Marvel Studios have always made it a point to include actors of a certain caliber and gravitas into their films. Whether it’s Glenn Close‘s minor role in Guardians of the Galaxy as Irani Rael or Robert Redford‘s game-changing turn as Alexander Pierce in 2014’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier, the inclusion of these actors have effectively elevated the reputation of these films, despite them being the mass consumption popcorn films they are. November’s Thor: Ragnarok will definitely be one of these films as director Taika Waititi has confirmed in an interview with the AVClub that Jurassic Park actor Sam Neill has indeed joined the cast of the Norse epic, following rumors from months ago that the actor brought up on Twitter.
He blabbed on the internet, didn’t he? I don’t want to say too much about it, because it’s a really cool little thing that he’s doing.
Hoping that he’s an alien archeologist on Sakaar. Waititi was also asked about the film’s massive cosmic setting and whether his ingenuity for off-beat eccentric storytelling would reflect on the film’s outcome.
I think the overall sense that I’m trying to give to the audience and what I want the audience to leave the cinema carrying with them is a sense of joy really.
Sometimes I would stop and think, I’m doing a movie that’s got Thor and Doctor Strange and The Incredible Hulk and Loki and every character is so strange and different. In Civil War, it’s just humans, humans with human problems. Ours is creatures and beings and all these sorts of really different characters. Again displaying human problems, but in outer space or in other worlds.
Some people have issues with the decision to hire Waititi given his background as a comedian and the general complaint that the Thor films are too silly but if you ask me, these comments are nothing but encouraging. Waititi is a fantastic storyteller with an incredible track record of writing characters with wit and emotional truth. His comments clearly indicate an understanding for the otherworldly source material and that his imprint could potentially make a mark in the MCU unlike any other director yet.
What do you think of Sam Neill‘s involvement in the film and Taika’s comments about the tone? Let us know in the comments below!
