Set visits to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 are hitting the internet, and the info coming out is helping everyone understand a little better where the MCU is heading. While most of the reveals have been concerning James Gunn‘s sequel, at times the conversation bleeds into a bigger topic. One example would be the chat Kevin Feige had with Screenrant, in which the talked about how the worlds of Guardians and Thor: Ragnarok are connected.
I don’t know about [Thor: Ragnarok] branching off from [Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2], but certainly inhabiting similar areas from this. A lot of our upcoming movies will. I mean the upcoming movies will be as much up here, as they are on Earth, starting with not Spider-Man, starting with Thor: Ragnarok. There are three scenes on Earth in Thor: Ragnarok. Everything else is Asgard, and not all of these worlds, but world that certainly, let’s put it this way, in Thor lingo, it’s beyond the nine realms. There are other planets that we spend a lot of time on in Thor: Ragnarok, that certainly people would say, ‘oh, that’s sort of like the Guardians world’, but they’re just other areas of the Marvel cosmos universe.
The move from Earth-based films to cosmic films in Phase Three makes a lot of sense. Early on it was important for Marvel to ground their universe and make it easy to identify with. The familiarity of movies centered around New York City or California allowed fans to get comfortable with the more fantastic elements of the universe. As time has gone, however, audiences are now ready for more otherworldly events. The “Infinity Gauntlet” story is so geared toward the cosmic stuff that it makes sense for the focus to shift futher and further away from earth.
The quote also tells fans just how much of Thor: Ragnarok will take place in New York. He says “three scenes” and one of those (presumably) was already part of Doctor Strange as a mid-credits scene. This detail likely means that Benedict Cumberbatch‘s role is closer to a cameo than an integral part in the film. Ragnarok has so many elements (Asgardian strife, gladiator battles, Odin trapped on earth) that the final balance of stories should be an interesting development to watch.
With Thor traveling the cosmos in this film– which has been called a “road trip film”– the exact connection between Asgard and the world of the Guardians of the Galaxy is an interesting universe building component. While Asgardians are largely thought of on Earth as aliens, and the Asgardians have been seen in places like Knowhere, the exact relationship of the “nine realms” and outer space is sketchy. Traveling via the Bifrost seems to indicate more of an interdimensional jump than a mere ride in a space ship. For example, could Star Lord jump in the Milano and fly to Asgard? Hopefully, the relationship between the realms and space and earth will be further fleshed out in the coming movies.
