Last year Natalie Portman made it very clear that she most likely wouldn’t be appearing in any more Marvel films, but that left us wondering what would become of her character, Jane Foster. Well according to Kevin Feige, Jane and Thor simply broke up off-screen after **Thor: The Dark World and that in ***Thor: Ragnarok***, Thor is “certainly enjoying being a drifter, being a solo cowboy out there.” Pretty anti-climactic, but it looks like off-screen break ups are apparently becoming a thing in the MCU. Remember when Tony and Pepper were still a thing?
Of course, Foster won’t be the last actress to star alongside Chris Hemsworth, as Tessa Thompson is set to make her Marvel debut in Ragnarok as Valkyrie. It’s unclear if she’ll end up being a direct love interest for Thor, but Feige had the following to say regarding their relationship:
We wanted Thor to encounter somebody that was near his equal and that his relationship with Jane may have evolved in unexpected ways in between The Dark World and Ragnarok and we wanted to pit him against a character who was much more his equal and in many ways his superior. Valkyrie is trying to not embrace any sort of Asgardian heritage that she has. Thor thinks maybe that will create a bond between them and, on the contrary, she wants to forget it all entirely.
As great of an actor Natalie Portman is, we’re glad they finally got rid of the non-existent chemistry between her and Hemsworth. Though it is a bit of a shame that we never got to see Sif step up to that role after the hints they established in Thor: The Dark World. But hey, maybe we eventually see Thor come face to face with all his former and potential love interests in the MCU in a The Bachelor-inspired Taika Waititi directed one-shot.
Thor: Ragnarok is set to debut in theaters on November 3, 2017.
