Since Loki came to Earth through a portal openend by the Tesseract in The Avengers, we have slowly seen Thanos’s efforts to accumulate the Infinity Stones come into focus (although to be honest, it’s still pretty blurry). While do know that Thanos is out to collect the 6 Infinity Stones (here’s our rundown of where they currently reside in the MCU), we don’t know what motivation he has other than to fill out his super-cool collector’s edition Infinity Gauntlet.
Should the Russo brothers choose to follow the story line devised by Jim Starlin in his classic Infinity Gauntlet story, Thanos’s true motivation would be to garner the affection of Lady Death (death literally personified). You may remember Thanos’s sneer when The Other told him that messing with the Avengers would be “to court death” so it is totally reasonable to think that the cinematic arc may at least be informed by the comics. Since her presence in Thor: Ragnarok was revealed, a popular theory among fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is that Cate Blanchett’s Hela will fill the role of Thanos’s unrequited love.
It wouldn’t be the first time Marvel Studios made a mash-up character (Iron Man II‘s Vanko comes immediately to mind) and given the relatively short amount of time Marvel Studios has to set up the remaining exposition of Thanos’s plan, introducing Hela and then introducing another, other Death goddess would seem a bit much. Taking that as the given, it stands to reason that this popular fan theory may actually come to fruition in the movies. Add to it an additional piece of evidence, and it starts to really seem to hold water.
The comics may have recently given us that additional piece of evidence as it was just revealed (in the pages of Unworthy Thor #5) that Thanos has a new lover and it is indeed Hela. If Marvel Comics is making the move to pair these two lunatics ahead of their potential hook-up it wouldn’t be the first time that the comics have found opportunities for synergy with the film division. Star-Lord, Hawkeye and Yondu have seen their looks updated and the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. have found their way onto the page.
If we are to believe this, we might even see Thanos appear during Ragnarok in an effort to court Hela. Maybe their idea of courtship is drinking from the skulls of fallen Asgardians or something otherwise kinky.
If this pairing between Hela and Thanos is a bit of foreshadowing of what to expect in the films, how do you feel about the Mad Titan and the Mistress of the Darkness? Are you too much of a traditionalist to accept their love or do you think that this pairing is a good fit for the MCU?
